{"id":44423,"date":"2020-03-06T10:16:00","date_gmt":"2020-03-06T14:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/caireadydev1.wpenginepowered.com\/life-sciences\/cai-is-rework-killing-your-packaging-line-efficiencies-0\/"},"modified":"2025-06-21T17:53:46","modified_gmt":"2025-06-21T21:53:46","slug":"is-rework-killing-your-packaging-line-efficiencies-0","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/caiready.com\/life-sciences\/blog\/is-rework-killing-your-packaging-line-efficiencies-0\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Rework Killing Your Packaging Line Efficiencies?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.8rem;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn2.hubspot.net\/hubfs\/705173\/Non-Pharma%20-08.jpg\" alt=\"Non-Pharma -08.jpg\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.8rem;\">One <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.8rem;\">of<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.8rem;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.8rem;\">thing<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.8rem;\">s<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.8rem;\"> that I have heard <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.8rem;\">too often regarding the running of a packaging line<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.8rem;\">\u00a0is<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.8rem;\">:<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.8rem;\"> \u201cIs it running at its maximum qualified range?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.8rem;\">My question has always been<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.8rem;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.8rem;\"> \u201cWhy is that the important requirement?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.8rem;\">I like to believe that overall efficiency and throughput <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.8rem;\">are the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.8rem;\">main goal of the packaging line and how fast the equipment is running <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.8rem;\">should not be the end-all goal.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.8rem;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.8rem;\">Let me explain.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.8rem;\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>On the packaging line, many pieces of equipment are tightly packed with each other for the completion of the product.\u00a0 For example, for\u00a0an oral solid dosage product, the line could incorporate a bottle unscrambler, desiccant placer, filler, cottoner, capper, checkweigher, induction sealer, retorquer, neckbander, labeler, cartoner, secondary checkweigher, casepacker,\u00a0and possibly other specialty equipment.\u00a0This is all brought together in a series of conveyors, surge tables, and various inputs of packaging materials.\u00a0With all of\u00a0that\u00a0going on, finding\u00a0the\u00a0\u201csteady state\u201d is the challenge, and for that, faster is not always better.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Running equipment at a pace that is\u00a0less than optimal for the particular batch being completed will lead to downtime and rework that will take away from not only the line efficiency for the batch but also\u00a0the company\u2019s bottom line.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A line study that I completed occurred because the company was using line speed as a key performance indicator (kpi) for the line efficiency.\u00a0However, the line didn\u2019t seem to be \u201cmeeting its numbers\u201d based on the mathematical calculations being used for scheduling.\u00a0It was also overbudget for material usage.\u00a0If those computing these expectations would have taken the time to visit the line, they would have seen what was really going on.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Running the equipment as fast as possible, in line with the validated parameters, is not always the proper approach to the optimal end.\u00a0Every product mix, and even batch to batch within a product, has variances that may require some adjustments of the set up and operation of the line.\u00a0Campaigning of products (the running of multiple batches of same product between total cleanup) can affect the way the filler runs the product on the subsequent batches due to some residue collection on the equipment.\u00a0Even the best air handling system will not return the product contact surfaces to pristine condition.
